‘Why is the catcher out there?’ Cubs Smiley, Perfect Game Failed

Chicago Cubs left-hander Drew Smiley missed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to set a record.

On the 22nd (Korean time), Smiley did not send out a single runner until the 7th inning, starting the home game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

With only 6 out counts left until the perfect game, David Peralta, the first batter in the top of the 8th inning, hit a slow batted ball rolling inside the third base foul line. 안전놀이터

It was not an easy hit to deal with. Still, Smiley calmly approached and bent down to catch the ball.

But after that, a rare scene came out. Catcher Yan Gomes came out to catch his batted ball, but couldn’t avoid Smiley and the two collided.

The two collided and fell onto the field as if the catcher was carrying the pitcher. Smiley, who blew off the perfect game and the no-hitter challenge at the same time, smiled dejectedly.

He, who had never recorded a shutout since 2014 during the Tampa Bay Race, tried for a shutout after 9 years, but eventually went down the mound with 2 outs in the 8th inning.

He had to be content with his second win of the season, with 7 2/3 innings, 1 hit, 10 strikeouts and no runs, leading the team to a 13-0 victory.
