Who is the fifth protagonist of Andong City’s Baek Am Bae?

The fifth Andong City Baekambaek Go Open, held in the ‘Capital of Korean Spiritual Culture’, began its four-day tournament with an opening ceremony. More than 700 people, including participating players, attended the opening ceremony at Andong Gymnasium on the afternoon of the 17th.

Andong Mayor Kwon Ki-chang gave a welcome speech, saying, “I hope it will be a place of festivities through the courtesy and good faith competition of Go.” He added, “I hope it will be an opportunity to further expand the base of Go.”

In his speech, Kim Chang-han, director of Baekam Cultural Foundation, said, “It has been difficult for go players to meet face-to-face in the past few years due to the coronavirus pandemic, but I hope you can share your stories to the fullest through this tournament.”

Following the opening declaration by Mayor Kwon Ki-chang, the tournament began with about 500 players raising their go stones in unison. The open championship, which attracted 116 professional players and 20 amateurs, held preliminary rounds and 24 quarterfinal rounds on the 17th and 18th, followed by the winner’s match on the 19th and 20th at Gunja Village and Baek Am’s birthplace.

The prize money for the professional and amateur open championship is 30 million won for the winner and 10 million won for the runner-up in the time-accumulation method (Fisher) with an additional 20 seconds for each 20 minutes.

130 players participated in the preliminary round of the Pro-Am Open.

In the amateur category, the Gyeongsangbuk-do fellow hobbyist team competition, Daegu and Gyeongbuk strongest individual competition, Daegu and Gyeongbuk student division, and national student organization competition will be held at Andong Gymnasium for two days from the 17th.

The 5th Andong City Baekambaek Open Championship is co-sponsored by Gyeongsangbuk-do, Andong City, Baekam Education Foundation, and Golden Property, co-organized by Korea Kiwon and Andong City Sports Association, and co-organized by Gyeongbuk Go Association and Andong City Go Association.
