Olympiacos picks Martinez for new boss as Hwang In-Beom jumps ship
Hwang In-beom’s club Olympiacos (Greece) has selected Spanish coach Diego Martinez as its new head coach.
Olympiakos announced on its website on July 21 (KST), “We are signing a contract with Coach Martinez. He will lead the team as the new head coach.”
Martinez, born in 1980, has been a player-coach in Spain since the mid-2000s.
After coaching at Sevilla in the early 2010s, Martínez took the helm of Granada CF in the 2018-2019 season and led the club to promotion to the Primera Liga (La Liga) in his first season.메이저사이트
His leadership was also recognized in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 seasons, when he took the team from second division to mid-table in a short period of time, finishing 7th and 9th respectively.
Martinez left the club at the end of the 2020-2021 season, which also saw them reach the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa League, before returning to La Liga at the helm of RCD Espanyol for the 2022-2023 season.
However, he left the club in April this year after failing to prevent Espanyol’s relegation to 19th place in the league.

Olympiakos went through three head coaches in the 2022-2023 season alone.
The club fired Pedro Martins at the start of the season last September and handed the reins to Carlos Corberan.
However, after Corberan failed to deliver a convincing victory in the European club competition, the club replaced him with José Miguel González Martin del Campo, affectionately known as “Mitchell,” after just 48 days in charge.
Mitchell was only in charge for seven months.
After parting ways with Mitchell in April, Olympiakos finished the regular season in third place without an official head coach.
This is not a good enough result for Olympiakos, who have won the most Elada titles (47) in the Greek Superliga.
In his first season in Greece, Hwang was named Olympiakos’ Player of the Year by the organization’s website, and he has expressed his love for the team in several media interviews.
While visiting the Daejeon World Cup Stadium for a K League match earlier this month, Hwang was asked by the press about his future, and he replied, “I received so much love from Olympiacos in one season, and I grew a lot in one year. I don’t think it’s polite to say that I want to leave unconditionally.”
